National Audit of Dementia

The first full report of the National Audit of Dementia has identified a need for significant improvements in hospital ward environments, staff training and the overall approach to care delivery for patients with dementia.

New drug for C. difficile

The European Commission has granted a marketing authorisation for fidaxomicin (DIFICLIR™) tablets for the treatment of adults with Clostridium difficile infections (CDI), also known as C. difficile-associated diarrhoea (CDAD), in the European Union.

Wales patients to receive Dupuytren's contracture treatment

NHS patients in Wales will now have access to the first licensed injectable treatment option for Dupuytren's contracture, which has been recommend for restricted use by All Wales Medicine Strategy Group (AWMSG).

Collagenase clostridium histolyticum (Xiapex®) was launched in the UK in April 2011, to treat Dupuytren's contracture in adult patients with a palpable cord. Collagenase clostridium histolyticum offers an alternative treatment option to surgery for Dupuytren's contracture.

New AF registry

The first patient has been enrolled into the PREvention oF thromboembolic events - European Registry in Atrial Fibrillation (PREFER in AF). Taking a comprehensive approach to the patient registry, PREFER in AF will gather data on the full spectrum of AF patients including those with valvular and non valvular forms of the condition.

NICE criticised for prostate drug

The Prostate Cancer Charity has criticised NICE for not recommending the newly licensed chemotherapy drug cabazitaxel as a treatment for men with advanced prostate cancer despite evidence the drug significantly extends the lives of men in the advanced stages of the disease.

A new vision for old age

In a new study from the Economist Intelligence Unit on healthcare provision for an ageing population, supported by Pfizer, the overwhelming majority of health professionals surveyed (80%) express their concern about how they will be treated when they grow old. They are sceptical that current policies to address demographic shift caused by an ageing population are comprehensive, realistic or sufficiently funded to address future demand.
